Normandale Community College Art Department’s Art Activism and Creative Citizenship: Empty Bowls spring semester course culminates in an Empty Bowls sale, that will benefit Normandale’s Campus Cupboard, on Wednesday, April 29 from 12 to 3 p.m. at the main Library Entrance.
In the Art Activism and Creative Citizenship: Empty Bowls spring semester course, Normandale students examined aspects of food insecurity in community colleges, and discussed how to use ceramic art to raise awareness and apply creative citizenship. Students worked collaboratively on creating and donating ceramic pieces, along with organizing the Empty Bowls event to provide tangible support as well as fostering civic engagement and positive social change.
“So much of art education traditionally centers on the individual arts and the act of making,” said Normandale Art instructor Lazare Rottach. “With this course, I wanted students to examine the broader purpose of their work, how art functions in the world, who it serves and how creative practice can be connected to civic responsibility and community impact.”
The event will also feature tours of the Campus Cupboard, limited grocery bags for students, musical performances from the Music Department and refreshments.
Most of the pottery will be priced between $20 to $30. Credit cards, cash and checks are accepted. Additional donations are also welcome.
This marks the 24th year of Empty Bowls at Normandale, following a brief pause in recent years. This will be the first time the event will benefit the Normandale Campus Cupboard, which is a free campus resource that provides food to any Normandale students. The Campus Cupboard provides non-perishable food (that does not need to be refrigerated), fresh and frozen food and meals on the go. To learn more you can go to normandale.edu/campus-cupboard.
